 During August and September, the cruiser operated with other Australian warships in the Pacific as a counter to the German East Asia Squadron, and was involved in the capture of several German colonies. The cruiser covered 11,170 miles on Pacific patrols. The schooner encountered a storm north of New Zealand and began to sink.
